My personal story is one of transformation. I started my health & wellness journey at the early age of 13. In 8th grade, we had to research and write about a career we might like to pursue. I knew I wanted to go after a career in the health field working directly with people because I loved both health and people. I tossed around several ideas in healthcare including pediatrician & nurse, eventually settling on the profession of physical therapy.
My parents also influenced my health journey by both modeling & encouraging home cooking, eating nutritious foods, trying new foods, eating a variety of fruits & vegetables (many from our garden & trees), gardening, playing outdoors in nature, and enjoying a homecooked meal & fellowship around a table. My dad also took my sisters & me to the Hartville flea & farmers market.
To this day, I love delicious & nutritious foods, including foods from other cultures. I also enjoy attempting new recipes & adjusting them to make them my own. I have a vegetable & herb garden, grapevines, and fruit trees. All three of my kids garden, cook, are physically active, and enjoy the great outdoors.
I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from Bowling Green State University in December of 1991. I practiced Physical Therapy from 1992-2016. During my time working as a Physical Therapist (PT), I started to become aware of the path healthcare was taking—one of treatment & not prevention. I also realized we were living in a society riddled with chronic illness & disease. One that was getting worse instead of better.
In 2016, I took a hiatus from being a PT, staying at home to focus on my family. During this time, a friend got me involved with the company Pure Haven which offers a line of non-toxic products (personal & home). Through this company, I researched and learned what’s in the products we use every day and how to make healthier and safer choices for myself, my family & friends. I continue to be a consultant for Pure Haven today and love to educate & empower others to make safer choices, not only with the products they use but also with the food they consume.
Over the summer of 2020, during a time of meditation/reflection, I hit my breaking point. I felt miserable. I was discontent, unfulfilled & stuck—physically, mentally & emotionally. I was out of shape & couldn’t lose weight; stressed; irritable & short-tempered; breaking out with skin rashes & acne; sleeping poorly; craving coffee & sugar; and menopausal (in other words, hormonally imbalanced).
I also didn’t want to return to my PT career per se, at least not in the traditional sense. But I wasn’t quite sure what direction to take in my career. I feel this added to my discontentment.
During the summer of 2020, I signed up to receive emails from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN) because it piqued my interest in health & wellness. But I didn’t sign up for the program because I wasn’t quite ready to take the next step.
When Labor Day 2020 rolled around, I decided to step out of my comfort zone, take courageous action, and sign myself up for the Institute of Integrative Nutrition’s Health Coach Training Program. This is where my journey of transformation truly began.
I knew I was on the right path when one of my instructors, Lissa Rankin, MD, spoke about Kurt Vonnegut’s book “Cat’s Cradle” & the Karass and went on to say that each of us is here to fulfill our holy purpose in our own way, the only way each of us can do. The moment she said this I knew I was where I was supposed to be. I was on my path to fulfill my purpose.
During my education at IIN, I studied a variety of dietary theories & practical lifestyle coaching methods, but I also learned to coach myself. As I did this, I learned to take time to breathe, hit the pause button, clear the noise, and really listen to my true self. Then, I identified my next step and took it, even if it was a bit scary.
Today, I am:
Through my own transformation, I realized I can guide & inspire people, like you, to create a healthy life you will love. For me, change wasn’t & isn’t a one-time event. I’ve learned to stop judging myself and to offer myself grace and compassion through all of it. I invite you to view change as an opportunity for growth.
